Is Most of What People Buy Totally Unnecessary?

Standard

Is it true that most of what people buy, in this day and age, is totally unnecessary? Have you ever heard the expression, “You are what you eat.”? Well, we are also what we purchase. From what I have experienced, there are two main reasons why we buy unnecessary products. Number one is to feel better about ourselves. The second reason is to make ourselves look better in the presents of others, or to impress others.

“Outside of that which is found in a few aisles in the grocery and hardware stores, most of what you consume is totally unnecessary.” That was adapted Living It Up: Our Love Affair with Luxury by James B. Twitchell. I find this partially correct. The many forms of electronic entertainment is one of the things that I find extremely unnecessary. I am not clear of fault, I enjoy engaging with games or movies. But if we look around at God’s great world, we will see that there is absolutely no need to electronic entertainment.

Nearly everything we own is unnecessary. The average American woman owns over 600 dresses, 1,116 tops, and over 400 pairs of shoes. We could live our lives with one outfit and one pair of shoes. Instead, we have multiple selections, many more that needed.

In conclusion, I would like to propose that we begin to limit ourselves to only purchasing products that are absolutely necessary. We have allowed ourselves to buy unnecessary things, and I agree with James B. Twitchell that the majority of the products that we own is just our love affair with luxury.

Are Quick Judgements Better than Thought out Decisions?

Standard

Are rash judgments better than well thought out decisions? In decision making, we often follow a guide, we go down a virtual list. We begin by weighing pros and cons, then talking things over with a friend or loved one. Finally, we draw a conclusion based on out past actions and experiences. In snap judgments that we make on the spot, with no reflection or thought beforehand, we do not follow such a methodical decision-making process.

Everything tells us that relying on quick judgments is unwise. This is because we have no time to sort through pros and cons, or reflect on past experiences. We still make such decisions, however. Though it is unwise, some say that snap decisions ultimately work out better than those which we give much thought.

In some situations, we need to rely on quick judgments, else we will lose our limited window of opportunity. For other times, it can be very important to make the correct selection, and this can be done over time. So is making quick decisions better than thought out judgments? It all depends on the situation and the opportunity.

If given the choice, take some time to go down the virtual list. Weigh the pros and cons, and ask someone for their opinion, then reflect on past actions and experiences. Figure out the best path and seize the opportunity.
Yes, thought out decisions are more reliable that rash judgments. But they each have a place. Sometimes, snap judgments work better in a situation than decisions that take time. In other times, it is the other way around. It really depends on the situation and the opportunity.

Does Remaining Impartial Improve Decision Making?

Standard

Do people make significantly wiser decisions, discoveries, and observations if they remain neutral and impartial? Just as many newspaper reporters have observed, the idea of objectivity as a guiding principle is too valuable to be abandoned. Objectivity means to observe and report on something from a truly unbiased position. The skill of objectivity is lacking in our society today.

Objectivity means to observe and report on something from a truly unbiased position. Even scientists haven’t obtained objectivity. This is the same with absolute truth. Everyone agrees that objectivity is valuable and necessary as a guiding principal, and without it, knowledge would be utterly useless. The idea of objectivity shouldn’t be abandoned.

Reporters and scientists both agree that objectivity is something that they lack. They continue to bring their personal opinions into their articles and experiments. For example, if a police officer witnessed a black truck crash into a blue SUV, he might come to the conclusion that all black truck drivers are maniacs. Later, he sees another crash involving a black truck and an orange buggy, and automatically believes that the crash was a result of the wild truck driver. Upon later research, he finds out that it was actually the BW Beatle that caused the crash. He will still think that the reckless truck driver had something to do with it. Personal opinion clouds the impartial judgment. So even when evidence points the other way, it is very difficult to remain impartial.

My Favorite Type of Music

Standard

Everyone has a favorite type of music. Some of the more popular genres are pop, rock, and rap. There are many different artists who have their own style within those categories. Popular pop, rock, and rap artists are Ariana Grande, Zendaya, Taylor Swift, and Nicki Manaj. You can dance and sing along to those types because of their fast tempo and fun lyrics. My favorite genre of music is known as classical with an edge. This music includes some of the instruments of classical music, but it is a bit more upbeat and energetic.

In the music genre, classical with an edge, many unique instruments are involved. There are the instrument that would be expected in classical music, such as the violin and flute. Then guitars, drums, and other popular instruments are added. Within the classical with an edge genre, many unique stations and versions emerge. While some of the songs are more rock and pop, others stick with the classical side a bit more.

Many ways have been created to listen to music. I like to borrow the CDs from the library. Though I have never been to a classical electronic concert, I would really like to. There are many websites and applications used for music, such as YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, and Amazon Music. Although all of these are available, I only need a few of them on my computer. YouTube, Pandora, and Amazon Music are the applications that I enjoy to listen to music on.

I enjoy listening to classical with an edge everywhere. I like to listen to it around the house while doing chores, and in the car while driving for long periods of time. My dad enjoys playing the Pandora station while we are hanging out and helping in the kitchen. I especially enjoy hearing the beautiful instruments while doing school. Classical with an edge is a great type of music to listen to whenever and wherever.

There are many classical electronic bands. Some of them include singing, while the bands that I prefer choose to exclude the vocals. I think that the music has a better sound when there is no singing, because it seems to interrupt the instruments; it is easier to relax to. A few of my favorite bands are E Nomine, Lindsey Sterling, Bond, Escala, and Apocalyptica. Each of them have a different unique sound.

E Nomine is a German electronica band. In one of their songs they sing the Lord’s Prayer in German. It’s beautiful. I particularly like their song, ‘Mitternacht,’ which is German for midnight. It is a wonderful song, with a large use of string instruments. It is a dark song that places images of mystery in your head. German singing is placed in with the music, which in this case, only adds to the greatness of the song.

Lindsey Stirling is violinist, dancer, and composer. She creates her own songs, and plays them on the violin. My favorite song of hers is called ‘Shadows.’ ‘Shadows’ is a fun song that gets you on your feet. It’s a song that everyone will want to dance.

Bond is an all-girl Australian British band who orchestrates beautiful upbeat music. Their music is the kind of classical with an edge that you could dance to. Their song, ‘Explosive,’ is probably my favorite. Windpipe instruments are included in this song, making it all the more amazing. The Bond girls did a great job on this song.

Escala is another talented female band. It is amazing to watch these bands play their instruments. ‘Requiem of a Tower’ is my favorite song from Bond. Beautifully orchestrated, it starts out slow, gaining speed and energy towards the end. ‘Requiem of a Tower’ is a fun classical with an edge song.

Apocalyptica is a talented classical rock band, and their style is slightly more rock than classical. Some of their songs include subtle vocals, which it nice sometimes. It adds just a bit of mystery to the songs. My favorite song from Apocalyptica is ‘Beyond Time,’ because of the way the different instruments all work together to make a beautiful song. These bands are extremely talented musicians, and I love the music that they make.

There are a large number of reasons why I love to listening to classical electronic music. It sounds great, and it’s inspiring. I like to draw when I am listening to this music because the sound makes me want to. Sometimes it is fun to dance to this music because it is so upbeat and energetic.

Although classical with an edge is one on my favorite types of music, I prefer to listen to Cristian rock music when I’m doing some of my easier school assignments. This is because of the fast tempo and the messages from the lyrics. I enjoy Christian rock music while doing my easier homework, I prefer to listen to classical with an edge for my harder assignments. It is soothing, and it helps me think.

Of all the styles of music, one that I prefer not to listen to is rap. I don’t particularly enjoy rap music, because I don’t feel that there is a reason for it. Rapping is singing extremely fast, which I don’t find appealing. Everyone has a type of music that they don’t necessarily enjoy, and for me, it’s rap.

Everyone has a favorite type of music that fits perfectly with their personality. My favorite type of music is classical with an edge because there are different sides of the same station. Sometimes it is more classical, and others it is more rock. Classical with an edge is inspiring, upbeat, and fun. Music is a wonderful form of art. It is really inspiring and thought provoking. Sometimes it is energetic and uplifting and other times it is relaxing and calming. I like Classical with an edge because it is both energetic and uplifting, as well as relaxing and calming.

My Favorite Birthday Gift

Standard

My favorite and most memorable gift that I received for my birthday was a second ear piercing. I went with my friend Reagan for my 13th birthday and we both got new piercings. I wanted to get them because I can wear two different pairs of earrings; A pair of studs and a set of dangles. I chose a pair of beautiful glass diamond studs for my new ear piercing. They are my favorite and most memorable gift because I will have them with me my entire life.

My Favorite Color

Standard

Although black is often associated with death, depression, darkness, and evil, it is my favorite color. Black is the beautiful backdrop for a star-filled sky. Black is the charred burnt logs of a ceasing fire. Black is the dark inside of a deep cave. Black is the leather jackets of the tough motorcycle riders. It is a dark and mysterious color, and I love it.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Standard

Jules Verne was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. He was best known for his adventure novels and his great influence on the literary genre of science fiction. He was born on February 8, 1828 in the French city of Nantes. The young Jules Verne was raised at his birthplace, attending school at Lycée Georges Clemenceau in France. Jules Verne led a wonderful life, and he died of old age at 77 years old. He died in Amiens, France, on March 24, 1905.

Jules Verne wrote many award winning books, including Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Around the World in Eighty Days, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. 20,000 Leagues is a tale about three friends who accidentally discover a secret submarine, the Nautilus. They explore the underwater world with Captain Nemo, the captain of the Nautilus. They even get into some trouble.
The underwater hunting trip was a very interesting section of the book. It showed Captain Nemo enjoying the company of Professor Aronnax by taking him on a hunting adventure to a deep sea forest. They took with them the necessary equipment to hunt, which included an electric gun. This gun shot a bolt of electricity as opposed to an actual bullet. It killed the animal, and even sustained enough volts to take down especially large species. The new gun was thought to kill the animal more humanly than a traditional gun. They traveled down along the ocean floor in their protective water suits towards the forest. Once they reached their destination, they marveled at the forest for a while, then returned in the direction of the Nautilus.

They were in view of the submarine when one of the men yelled at them through his water mask to get down. Once the men were lying on the sea floor, they saw the sharks. Three huge sharks were swimming in circles above them, hunting for food. They were not close enough to the sharks to use their shock guns to take down the giant beasts, so they waited on the sand as still as possible. Once the sharks had dispersed, they men were able to safely board the submarine.

The submarine Nautilus traveled on a tour around the world, for Captain Nemo intended to show his new passengers all the underwater wonders. They traveled for a long time, and eventually reached the North Pole. The waters of the North Pole were extremely cold, creating large ice walls. The submarine was driven far into the freezing ice maze, and it was too late to go back. They were stuck in the ice, with only enough air in the supply to last two days. The men slipped into their water suits and left the submarine in to the freezing waters of the North Pole. They examined and measured the width of the ice walls with a drill measure to see if escape was a possible option. The thinnest wall, being 10 meters in depth, was the one that the submarine was resting on. They began work immediately, chopping the ice around the Nautilus with heavy pickaxes.

They were nearly completed with the dangerous tiring task when the air supply ran extremely low. The workers boarded the Nautilus and waited to suffocate underwater in their submarine. Suddenly, the submarine shook. The weight of the submarine combined with the trench dug in the ice, the ice fell through and the Nautilus was free. With his last breaths, Captain Nemo guided the sub underneath the giant iceberg maze and up to the surface. In his last effort to serve his master, Conceal gave up his air tube to Professor Aronnax. The professor closed his eyes, preparing to die, when suddenly air filled his lungs. He was breathing! The air hatch had been opened, letting in a fresh wave of air. They were saved.

The Nautilus was continuing its tour around the underwater world when the submarine shook and tipped. Looking out one of the many windows, Conceal saw the devilfish. The devilfish was a giant black squid, with many more than eight tentacles. It had wrapped itself around the submarine, as if it were a sperm whale that it was hunting. As time went on, more devilfish began to appear. Their tight grip was beginning to dent and destroy the submarine. A few of the men quickly put on their water suits and began attacking the devilfish. One of the devilfish reached out its tentacle and wrapped it around one of the men, a close friend of Captain Nemo.

Astonished, the other men began chopping ferociously at the tentacles of the devilfish, attempting to free their friend. But with no luck. The devilfish had a tight hold on the man, and didn’t intend on letting go. They were able to chop a few of the tentacles off the giant squid, but not quickly enough to free their friend. Once the devilfish left the Nautilus, the submarine crew gave the man a proper underwater burial. They has escaped the strong grip of the devilfish and continued on their way.
